Some things to think about:

When we ask, "What is the chance of an event happening," it is the same as asking "What is the probability of it happening?"

The first step to finding the probability of some event is to count how many of the something you have, this number will be the denominator. So, for example, if someone asked you to close your eyes and grab a blue marble from the dish in the picture above what would the probablity be of grabbing a blue marble? To find this you would discover that your denominator is 11, because there are a total of 11 marbles in the dish.

The second step is to find the numerator. This is the number of things you are trying to get to happen. Meaning, in this case, how many blue marbles are in the dish? Because there are 2 blue marbles in the dish we know that the numerator is 2. In this example, the probability of you grabbing a blue marble from the dish with your eyes closed is: 2/11.

This is saying there are two out of eleven chances for you to get a blue marble.

1). It is important for you to understand the meaning of probability and the likelihood an event will happen. Define each the terms below. By clicking on the word link above each of the text fields.

Now that you have successfully completed the game activity answer the probability questions below. Type the answer in the box. REMEMBER: fractions look different on the computer than on paper. Also, to make the fraction sign on the keyboard use back slash (located next to the shift key).

3). With there only being the eggs you can see in this basket (the picture above), what is the probability of grabbing the green egg if you had to do so with your eyes closed?
1/5
1/10
1/6
2/8

4). Demaris loves red jelly beans. His friend told him he could have one, but he would have to take whatever he pulled out of the jelly bean bag. What is the probability Demaris will pull his favorite jelly bean?

6). Deja loves buying gum from the bubble gum machine at Wal-Mart. Only thirty pieces of gum are left. Deja likes blue and green gum. Using the table below answer the following questions.

15 /25
8/30
15/30

NOTE: Make sure that your scores are recorded by a teacher and then move onto the final problem.

Now that you are a probability expert it is your turn to create a probability problem. After your scores have been recorded you will open Microsoft PowerPoint and create your own probability problem. Your problem must follow the list below:

  • It has to be hard. No easy problems. It should at least two questions
  • You must use a picture or pictures. Remember you can always use Google image search to find a picture you can use with your problem. If you need help using Google image search, don't worry, just ask your teacher and they will show you how to use it.
  • Once you are done with your problem have two people solve it.

Make sure you print a copy of your probability problem. Keep a copy for yourself and give one to the teacher too.
