Read all the information below. After you have answered all the questions click Score Me at the bottom of the page. When you see your score raise your hand and a teacher will record your score. After you give your score to the teacher scroll to the bottom and read about the word problem you have to create.


There are many ways to solve a math problem. One way that often works best is to think of the problem as a mystery to be solved. As you read the problem be thinking about possible clues you might find. As you find clues, make notes of them. This often helps. This is called a strategy. There are many strategies you can use to solve a problem. Another good strategy is to draw a picture. Pictures often help you to understand a problem. Graphs and tables are other strategies that might help you to solve a math problem. One strategy you might already use is guess and check. This is when you make a guess as to what the answer might be and then check to see if it is correct. If it isn't you make another guess using any clues you might have found from your first guess and check. While you work the following problems you might want to use some of these strategies.


1). Larry has won American Idol and has just released his first CD. He wants to buy a CD for every one of his friends and family. There are a total of 22 people he wants to get the CD for. If his CD sells for $13.99, but he can buy as many as he wants at a discounted rate of $3 off this price, how much would it cost him to buy a CD for every one of his friends and family?

2). Jasmine has been hired by Fubu to design a new line of clothes. For her first assignment she needs to design a new running suit. It will cost $5.79 a yard for the fabric she needs to create the running suit. She needs to make two different suits, one small and one large. The large one needs about 3 yards of fabric and the small about 2 yards. To make she has enough fabric how much will she need to spend to make both suits? Hint: The fabric is only sold by the yard.

Now that you have some idea what makes a good word problem, it is your turn. Create your own word problem using MS Word or PowerPoint. Use pictures if you like and don't make it too easy.
