Read all the information below. After you have answered all the
questions click Score Me at the bottom of the
page. When you see your score raise your hand
and a teacher will record your score. After you give your score
to the teacher scroll to the bottom and read about the word problem
you have to create.
There are many ways to solve a math problem. One way that often
works best is to think of the problem as a mystery to be solved.
As you read the problem be thinking about possible clues you might
find. As you find clues, make notes of them. This often helps.
This is called a strategy. There are many strategies
you can use to solve a problem. Another good strategy is to draw
a picture. Pictures often help you to understand a problem.
Graphs and tables are other
strategies that might help you to solve a math problem. One strategy
you might already use is guess and check. This
is when you make a guess as to what the answer might be and then
check to see if it is correct. If it isn't you make another guess
using any clues you might have found from your first guess and
check. While you work the following problems you might want to
use some of these strategies.
1). Your local video rental store, Fibonacci's,
charges 1 cent a day for the first two days a PlayStation 2 game
is late. It charges 2 cents the third day, 3 cents the fourth
day, 5 cents the fifth day, and 8 cents the sixth day. How much
will you have to pay if you return a book 6 days late?
25 cents.
20 cents.
15 cents.
18 cents.
2). You are a world famous rapper. Nelly has
nothing on you! You have to figure out how much money you are
making because you aren't sure if your manager is taking advantage
of you. If you make $10 thousand for every concert you give and
your manager gives you $60 thousand, but you did 7 concerts how
much money is he shorting you?
$10,000.
$10.
$100,000 .
He didn't short you anything, you got exactly what you earned.
3). Snoop is a grown man. He weighs much more
than a little boy like Lil Romeo. If Snoop weighs 165 pounds and
Lil Romeo weighs 95 pounds, how much more does Snoop weigh than
Lil Romeo?
80 pounds.
65 pounds.
60 pounds.
70 pounds.
4). If it costs an adult $20 to get into Master
P's show, but only $15 for a child, how much would it cost for
2 adults and two children to get into the show?
$35.
$45.
$70.
$75 .
5). It takes Demaris 30 minutes to walk to the
TOP-CAT lab because he missed the bus. On the way home he catches
a ride from his uncle and it only takes 15 minutes. If he misses
the bus 2 weeks in a row and his uncle agrees to pick him up on
his way home in the same spot every week (so it takes 15 minutes
to get home), how long can he expect to spend walking to and from
the TOP-CAT lab by the end of the second week?
One hour and forty five minute.
One hour and a half.
One hour.
Two hours.
6). The record distances that Vantwan and Larry
can slam a basket from totals 16 feet. If Larry can slam from
4 feet farther than Vantwan, what is Larry's record distance?
8 feet.
6 feet.
14 feet.
10 feet.
7). Kenneth gave away 6 of his Yu-Gi-Oh cards.
He gave 2 more cards to Deja than he did to Kadeesha. How many
Yu-Gi-Oh cards did he give to Deja?
2.
6.
3.
4.
8). Your local Footlocker is running a special
on their old Jordan's to make room for the new ones. They have
a lot of old Jordan's that no one has ever worn. If the one year
old Jordan's cost $60, the two year old cost $50, the three year
old costs $40, and so on, how much will it cost you to buy a three
year old pair of Jordan's and a four year old pair of Jordan's?
$70.
$80 .
$90 .
$110.
9). After buying some Jordan's you realize you
need some new socks. Footlocker has a special on socks too. They
are selling socks at $4.00 for the first pair, $3.50 for the second
pair, $3.00 for the third pair and so one to the sixth pair of
socks, which would cost you $1.50. How much would it cost you
to buy four pairs of socks?
$12.50.
$12.00.
$13.00.
$4.00.
Now that you have some idea what makes a good word problem, it is your turn. Create your own word problem
using MS Word or PowerPoint. Use pictures if you like and don't make it too easy. When you have your Word problem finished, see
if anyone can solve it. Ask some of the adults in the room as well as some of your neighboring students. |
